Located on the southern part of island of Korcula, for centuries Brna has server as a shipping port for ships carrying wine produced in the nearby Smokvica. Production and living in this region began in the fourth century BC, when the island was settled by the ancient Greeks which began with wine and olive oil production which maintained to this day, and more recently has developed and tourism as the main economic activity. For thousands of years are on the island of Korcula alternated periods of war and peace, were managed by various rulers, there were different states and settlements, mixed the languages and scripts, touching, intertwined and merged culture and civilization, starting from the ancient Greek, roman empire and Venetian until the present day. Their traces remained written in the remains of settlements, burial mounds and defense of dry stone walls, weapons, jewelry, ceramics and amphorae. History of Brna is associated with the development of the center of the island and the medieval town of Korcula. During the Middle Ages all of these places had their port along the coast, along which are sprouted and fishing villages.
SMOKVICA
Smokvica is one of five old settlements on the island of Korcula in which the continuity of human life ending from prehistory to today. Name of Smokvica is associated with the Roman name for the nearby water puddles that donated life to Smokvica for centuries. Although the village with its limits us mentioned in the Korcula statute from 1214, the Illyrian Hill from 2nd century BC and numerous rustic villas from the ancient period are proof that life in these areas existed long before. Throughout history, people are constantly had to fight against various conquerors. At the site of "Bloody robbery" were fought major battles against the Turks. The village is settled not far from the church of Sv. Michael, church of the St. Michael was built on a rock with a view on all major routes to Smokvica. In memory of the battle and the role of guardian Smokvica developed Kumpanija, sword dance with swords showing villagers fight against invaders. Today Smokvica with Brna has 1000 inhabitants, and Smokvicians through the ages have remained known as excellent farmers which maintained the tradition of wine production in several wineries. Korcula Island has been inhabited since prehistoric times. First traces of life are found in Vela Spila in Vela Luka are dating back to the old Stone Age. According to legend, the island was settled by the Trojan hero Antenor in the 12 century BC. In 4 century BC Korcula is inhabited by ancient Greeks, for is witnessing Lumbarajska PSEFIZMA - contract written on a stone with the name of every settler, who called it Korkyra Melaina "Black Korcula", or Corcyra Nigra which was later called in Roman times. Marco Polo was born in the town of Korcula, trapped September 8, 1298 in the battle in front of the town of Korcula. Even today his birthplace can be visited to learn about many journeys in which he participated, and later described. Today Korcula Island has many sites and reminders of his turbulent past, intricate battles and its rulers and those which Korcula is especially proud: wine and culture of vine cultivation which is still grown in the traditional way, just as we were taught by our fathers. Densely planted vineyards, leaning and terraced fields which does not make use use of machinery, are speaking of a time when special attention and care was needed for producing wine.
